HISTORY

  • In 1924-1925 TG Morgan constructed the building using Oregon timber beams, a special order and shipped from the USA with construction completed in around 1926
  • The building was then sold to Rogers Motor Engineers in 1926 and opened as one of Adelaide’s first garages
  • In around 1935 the building then sold to J Dumbrell and Sons and became “Dumbrells Lolly Factory” manufacturing boiled lollies and sweets
  • From 1943-1947 the property stood vacant
  • Then in 1948 it was converted into a hardware store under the name “Gibson General Hardware”
  • After the war around 1952 it became “Glenelg Dry Cleaners”
  • In 1957 the building was then purchased by the Len Lintons family, who moved in as Lintons Garage which was originally on Jetty Rd Glenelg
  • Unfortunately Len Linton, an ex BSA England mechanic, died in the “sunny south disaster”, a sailing accident off Glenelg that took his life and 5 mates in 1935
  • From 1935 onward, Stanley Engelhardt managed Lintons Garage for the Linton family
  • Lintons Garage built “Lintons” brand push bikes
  • Stanley Engelhardt purchased the Lintons Garage business in 1959 from the Linton family and added additional fuel bowsers to service both Gordon and Augusta Street
  • Stanley Engelhardt continued selling Lintons bikes until 1962, then focused on repairing and selling English cars with his passion being for Jaguar and Renault
  • Lintons Garage then held a Waymouth Motors new car franchise selling Dodge, Chrysler, Valiant and Simca
  • The first new E type Jag in Adelaide was sold to Alf Wadham, and delivered to Lintons Garage
  • Stanley Engelhardt finally purchased the property in 1977 for $40,000, but sadly passed away in 1980
  • Peter Engelhardt (Stanley’s son) worked with his father from when he was 10 years old. Peter would pump the gas, and remembers giving change from one pound for a full tank of fuel. It was normal practice to fill your vehicle with fuel, write it in the book and pay later
  • At age 31 Peter Engelhardt took over Lintons Garage continuing the European auto service and his passion for classic and motor sport vehicles
  • In 2006 Mark Kraulis, the current caretaker, purchased the property from Peter Engelhardt and proceeded to renovate the property, driving by a passion to further preserve the buildings history
